Job Description
This position oversees the department's pharmacy program by managing the procurement, storage, inventory, distribution, and accountability of pharmaceuticals, controlled substances, intravenous fluids, and medical supplies used in emergency response. As the Pharmacy Paramedic, you'll help ensure firefighters and paramedics have immediate access to the medications and supplies they need to provide lifesaving care.
Working in a fast paced, mission driven environment, you'll maintain compliance with federal and state regulations, Virginia Board of Pharmacy requirements, DEA standards, and departmental policies while supporting inventory management, quality assurance, and regulatory readiness. Your work directly contributes to the department's ability to deliver safe, efficient, and high quality emergency medical care to the community every day.
Typical Tasks
- Manage the department's pharmaceutical inventory, including receiving, inspecting, storing, tracking, and distributing medications, controlled substances, intravenous fluids, and medical supplies.
- Ensure compliance with federal regulations, Virginia Board of Pharmacy requirements, DEA standards, the Code of Virginia, and departmental policies governing medication management and controlled substances.
- Conduct inventory counts, audits, reconciliations, and quality assurance activities to maintain accountability and regulatory compliance.
- Monitor medication inventory, expiration dates, and stock levels to ensure emergency response units remain fully equipped and operationally ready.
- Order pharmaceuticals, controlled substances, and medical supplies to maintain uninterrupted EMS operations.
- Deliver medications and medical supplies to fire stations and emergency response apparatus throughout the City.
- Maintain accurate electronic inventory records, prepare reports, and complete required documentation to support inspections, audits, and regulatory compliance.
- Remove expired medications, rotate inventory, and coordinate replacement to support patient safety and operational readiness.
- Maintain a secure, organized, and compliant pharmacy storage area.
- Inspect, clean, and coordinate maintenance of the pharmacy delivery vehicle.
- Collaborate with firefighters, paramedics, vendors, and department leadership to continuously improve pharmacy operations and support exceptional emergency medical services.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
